Host Family Program

Our Host Family Program gives international students the opportunity to experience U.S. culture as a member of an American family.

When moving abroad, every student has different needs and expectations and the adjustment can be challenging. With our host family program, we place international students with a family that will comfort, respect, and challenge the student and in exchange, students share their culture with their host family. This “home away from home”, is meant to ease the transition to an American high school.

All of our host families are part of the Sandy Spring Friends School community and have undergone thorough background checks as well as house visits. Families and students build strong relationships that last a lifetime. While families are helping students adjust to American life, they are respectful of the student’s culture and background and learn from them. When matching up a student with a host family we take into consideration a home’s proximity to school as well as the student’s and host family’s mutual interests

Weekend Activities

Our proximity to Washington, D.C. means that we have access to a wide variety of fun weekend events for our seven-day boarders. Weekend activities focus on community and global service, cultural exploration and celebration, and building healthy social relationships. Trips to the nation’s capital and surrounding area include visits to museums, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, sports games, and cultural events like the Renaissance Festival and Taste of D.C., just to name a few.
