On Tuesday, November 19, nearly 80 SSFS parents and guardians filled Westview Dining Hall, socializing, asking questions, and sharing ideas about strengthening the commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity at SSFS.
The interactive evening opened with a welcome by SSFS parents Dr. Joanna Schofner Scott (who moderated the evening) and Jen Ray, and featured Toni Graves Williamson. Ms. Williamson (Principal Consultant with the Glasgow Group) was a consultant for the SSFS Diversity Audit.
David Hickson and Julie Mendez, who serve on the SSFS Diversity Audit Steering Committee, took questions and discussed the School’s actions in planning and implementing the Diversity Reports’ recommendations and on-going accountability. A few highlights: hiring a Diversity Director is a first priority, the SSFS hiring process is being revised and updated, and key faculty have participated in a 3-day training on anti-bias hiring practices.
Ms. Williamson also introduced a framework for forming parent/guardian affinity groups and alliance groups—an important component to the Diversity Report Action Plan recommendations.
Intersect is a parent/guardian-facilitated initiative to empower parents/guardians to take part in SSFS Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts so that Let your Lives Speak is a motto that every student can realize.
