Upper School Students Participate in DECA's 2026 International Career Development Conference

By Suvia Evans, US Math Teacher and DECA Faculty Sponsor

DECA is an international organization encouraging development of business and entrepreneurship skills through educational opportunities and competitions. The SSFS chapter was established by current senior Matthew Burd in the spring of 2024. For the second year in a row we had a student place in the top 3 in their category at the State convention and thereby earn a spot at the International Career Development Conference.

SSFS junior Jituu N. represented SSFS and Maryland in the Principles of Entrepreneurship competition in Atlanta, GA from April 25-28, 2026. In addition, SSFS sophomore Clara K. represented SSFS at the Thrive Academy - a specialized leadership training program designed to help members cultivate skills in collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. As part of the Emerging Leader Series, it is by invitation only to chapters that attain Thrive Level through various campaigns. Sandy Spring Friends School was one of only two schools in Maryland to qualify for this honor.

Or, as Springers call them, "Gnu Stories"

Since our mascot is the wildebeest—also called "gnu"—our community newsletter is similarly named and shares the stories of the inspiring people, purposeful programming, and energizing events that fill our lives throughout the year.
