SSFS Quiz Bowl Team Update - February 2026

On Thursday, February 5, the SSFS Quiz Bowl Team traveled to Richard Montgomery High School for the Semifinal Round of the Montgomery Academic Beltway League (MABL) Playoffs. After earning their playoff berth for the thirteenth consecutive season and entering the round as the league’s #2 overall seed, SSFS faced the high-stakes reality of postseason competition, where advancement must be earned one match at a time. The team rose to the challenge in commanding fashion. SSFS finished the Semifinal Round undefeated at 3–0, opening with a dominant 620–165 victory over Einstein, battling past a strong Walter Johnson A squad 445–320, and closing the day with a decisive 480–365 win over perennial contender Poolesville. Post-Match Summary of MABL Playoffs Semifinal Round

SSFS hit the road on Feb. 5 for the Playoffs Semifinal Round of this season’s Montgomery Academic Beltway League (MABL) at Richard Montgomery HS. Having earned its rightful place in this year's MABL Playoffs -- and for the thirteenth straight year -- by finishing among the top 16 teams following five regular season rounds, SSFS, represented by Justin (Captain), Nate, Ian, Steve, Benji, Catherine, and Henry, entered the MABL Semifinal Round as the #2 seed overall (SSFS played the teams in BOLD during the regular season):

Teams ranked 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 form Bracket 1, while those ranked 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 form Bracket 2:

Entering the round, we knew we would play three matches, but we only knew our first opponent, Einstein. They qualified for the MABL Semifinal Round as the #16 seed (6-8-0), averaging 294/match. The outcome of Game 1 would determine the next course of action and so on. Regardless, our objective was to finish among the top four in our 8-team bracket to advance to the Championship Round. Doing so would require SSFS to finish with a record of no less than 2-1-0.  We understood heading into today's MABL Semifinal Round that it would be a "mortal experience." In other words, unlike previous MABL Rounds, where whatever happened, we were ensured of another MABL Round, today would either end with us advancing to the MABL Championship Round or seeing our run in this season's MABL come to an abrupt end, especially for our amazing seniors Justin, Nate, Ian, and Steve. This is how it went…

MABL SEMIFINAL ROUND (SSFS 3-0-0) and (1,545 PF – 850 PA):

• vs. Einstein W (620-165)

SSFS AVERAGE POINTS PER GAME: 515

SSFS POINTS ALLOWED PER GAME: 283

When the dust settled, SSFS finished the Semifinal Round a perfect 3-0-0, securing first place in Bracket 2 and punching its ticket to the MABL Championship Round. The team delivered an outstanding all-around performance, combining balanced scoring, strategic depth, and impressive composure against three very different opponents. After setting the tone with a dominant opening match against Einstein, SSFS showed resilience and focus in a hard-fought contest against a strong Walter Johnson A squad, before closing the day with another convincing win over perennial contender Poolesville.

Across the three matches, SSFS demonstrated both offensive firepower and defensive discipline, averaging 515 points per match while limiting opponents to just 283 points per match—a margin that reflects not only strong individual knowledge, but also excellent teamwork, communication, and lineup versatility. Contributions came from across the roster, with Justin’s leadership and steady captaincy helping to anchor the team, while Nate, Ian, Steve, Benji, Catherine, and Henry each played critical roles in maintaining momentum and closing out matches. 

Perhaps most importantly, today’s results ensure that our seniors—Justin, Nate, Ian, and Steve—extend their MABL journey as far as it can go; to the championship round, a fitting outcome for a group whose dedication, preparation, and competitive spirit have helped sustain SSFS’s remarkable streak of thirteen consecutive MABL playoff appearances.

With the Semifinal Round successfully behind us, SSFS now turns its attention to the MABL Championship Round, scheduled for Thursday, February 26, where the competition will intensify, and every tossup and bonus will matter even more. If today was any indication, this team is prepared to embrace the challenge, finding comfort in knowing that “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution,” a fitting quote commonly attributed to Aristotle.
