SSFS 2025 Spring Sports Highlights

SSFS 2025 Spring Sports Highlights

It was another banner spring season for SSFS! The 'Beests ran away with several season and championship banners and wins, including the MS Track and Field PVAC Tournament Championship, Varsity Baseball PVAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, and Varsity Lacrosse's South Hagerstown Classic Championship win. In addition, ten seniors  signed commitments to play sports at selected colleges, universities, and conferences. Our amazing student athletes will take their athletic skills to the next level in various sports, including baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, tennis, and track & field. Although their journeys will continue elsewhere, as Athletic Director Sal Benitez says, "They will always carry 'the 'Beest' within!" See below for full updates from all our spring teams, and thanks to all the fans who came out to support our athletes!

UPPER SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD
Head Coach Edward Graves
It was a historic season for the track and field program, with both the men's and women’s teams capturing 1st place in the PVAC conference. The team’s depth, determination, and standout performances led to a dominant showing across events and a well-deserved sweep of the conference titles. In addition to their team success, the program saw four athletes earn national rankings, a testament to the elite talent and dedication within the squad. Capping off the season, two seniors committed to NCAA Division I programs, continuing the program’s tradition of developing high-level student-athletes.

As the 2025 varsity softball season comes to a close, I reflect with pride and gratitude on a remarkable journey. The team demonstrated exceptional resilience, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the season, culminating in a well-deserved appearance in the PVAC Championship game for the third year in a row! Making it to the championship is a testament to the hard work and dedication of every player, and I could not be more proud of their efforts both on and off the field.

As previously shared, two of our outstanding athletes were recognized for their performance and contributions by being named to the PVAC All-Conference First and Second Teams—a well-earned honor that reflects their skill, leadership, and dedication.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Head Coach Dan Conway
As a coach, some teams you like coaching, and other teams you REALLY enjoy coaching. From start to finish, this years' Middle School girls softball team has been one of my favorite teams that I have had the privilege to lead. Comprising ten 8th graders and one honorary 8th grader (7th grade), this team was full of leaders and doers. Starting with co-captains Stella and Mabel Milici, team manager Lelia DeBacker, as well as several returning players, it was almost like I had a full team of co-coaches. They worked and practiced hard to get better, they listened (were coachable), and they showed up every practice and game ready to compete.

Pitching is the name of this game, and after identifying one of last years' pitchers, I quickly found two other players with natural ability and good pitching motions in Stella Milici and Riley Bakshs. These three led us for the whole season, with many strikeouts in their wake. Behind these pitchers we had a really stellar defense, with everyone making highlight reel plays, such as Maddie Cunnigham at shortstop reaching to grab a low line drive, or making two consecutive strong throws to first to end an inning. Or Meena Puram catching a high fly ball. Or Stella diving on the ground to catch a ball.

Overall we finished with 2 wins and three losses. The best win was in the quarterfinals of the playoffs, when everyone got in the hit parade leading us to a 19-8 victory. Margo Chmil hit a massive 3-run home run to lead the way. They also hit another long home run in the semi-finals, but we could not overcome the undefeated hosts. Shout outs to other players go to Jason Barham for assuming the difficult catcher's position, Liv Koprivica for being the most improved hitter, and Tiny (Clementine Parker) for always wanting the most batting practice.

BASEBALL

UPPER SCHOOL VARSITY BASEBALL
Head Coach John Fitzgerald
The 2025 SSFS Varsity Baseball team successfully defended its 2024 regular season title and added the 2025 PVAC Tournament Title to its accomplishments. Seniors Noah Gross, Jacob Edelman, Jack Fones, and Darrion Sardo led the way with standout performances throughout the season. Gross, a First Team All-PVAC selection, delivered a phenomenal season on the mound, going 5-0 with a 0.55 ERA and recording 48 strikeouts. Edelman, also a First Team All-PVAC selection and two-time PVAC Tournament MVA, dominated offensively, batting .640 with a .727 on-base percentage, .880 slugging percentage, and a 1.607 OPS—all leading the PVAC. Jack Fones earned Second Team All-PVAC honors, batting .417, posting a 0.750 WHIP, and leading the conference with 9 strikeouts as a reliever. Fellow senior Darrion Sardo, also a Second Team All-PVAC selection, contributed 11 stolen bases and scored 10 runs.

The team went 6-1 in PVAC conference play, facing strong competition from challengers such as Edmund Burke, CESJDS, Berman, and Field School. They also benefited from steady pitching by Second Team All-PVAC freshman Riis Agnew and sophomore Quin Ely. Solid defensive contributions came from freshman Henry Sommers, sophomore Charley Scace, and juniors Steve Kim and Ian Donahue. The Beests capped off their season with a dominant PVAC tournament performance, outscoring their opponents 29-0. Although the team will be younger next year, they will return with a wealth of varsity experience and a strong foundation for continued success.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL
Head Coach Corey Lyman
We’re incredibly proud of our middle school baseball team for an awesome season! With a strong group of 5 eighth graders, 10 seventh graders, and 7 sixth graders, this team came together, worked hard, and showed impressive growth throughout the year. From the first practice to the last game, the effort and teamwork were outstanding.

Each player brought something special to the team, and it was a joy to watch them compete, improve, and support one another. The season was a success not just because of the wins, but because of the dedication and heart every player showed.

To our 8th graders—thank you for your leadership. We wish you nothing but the best as you move on to high school baseball and beyond. To our 6th and 7th graders—we’re excited to see how you continue to grow and lead the way next season.

As we head into the offseason, we encourage everyone to keep throwing, get to the batting cages, and stay active. The work you put in now will make next season even better. Go beests!

LACROSSE

US Men's Lacrosse

UPPER SCHOOL MEN'S VARSITY LACROSSE
Head Coach Joseph Aschenbach II
The men’s lacrosse team wrapped up an impressive season with a 6-2 record under the guidance of their new head coach, marking a strong start to a new chapter for the program. The team showcased resilience, skill, and unity, making a statement with their consistent performances on both ends of the field.

US Women's Lacrosse

UPPER SCHOOL WOMEN'S VARSITY LACROSSE
Head Coach Robyn Linsenberg
The 2025 women's varsity lacrosse team truly exceeded all expectations! With almost half the team starting the sport, the team improved dramatically over the course of the season. A number of players rose to the occasion this year, becoming integral athletes on the field. As a first time player, senior Al Rivers stepped into the role of goalie. This was impressive in and of itself, but Al saved an incredible number of shots, with many refs and other coaches saying how spectacular she was. Eden Johnston-Shaw scored 17 goals this season, with 7 in one game! Finishing her senior year as captain, Kennedy Nix was a force on and off the field. Kennedy showed true leadership through encouraging the team, working with everyone, and being an excellent example of a middie and attack player! Overall, this year had a lot of firsts, and we are excited to expand on this for next season.
