Sixth Graders Publish Literary Magazine

Sixth Graders Publish Literary Magazine

The "Gnu Writers" sixth-grade literary magazine—a vibrant student-driven publication—came to life again this year at the conclusion of our engaging poetry unit. In each class block, students embrace the Quaker decision-making process, choosing a Clerk to guide the various departments of the magazine through the publishing journey. These Clerks take on the important role of maintaining organization and fostering communication among team members throughout the two-week creative endeavor.

Each aspiring writer contributes an original poem along with a thoughtful literary analysis, showcasing their voice. Once submitted, the magazine's departments undertake the essential tasks of evaluating, selecting, and editing the pieces that appear in the publication. Photographers collaborate with the Clerks to determine images that will complement the written works, enhancing the overall artistry of the magazine.

As the departments bustle with creativity, dedicated publishers work to design and fine-tune the magazine layout, ensuring that every page reflects the passion and effort of the students involved. The excitement culminates when students send emails to their families, sharing a link to the magazine and proudly unveiling the fruits of their labor. This year, the experience was particularly joyful when our seventh and eighth graders took a moment to reminisce about their own roles in past magazine productions, deepening their appreciation for the collaborative journey of storytelling.
