PA Spotlight: Ivy Debrah

PA Spotlight: Ivy Debrah

Tell us a little bit about your family - your kids, how long you’ve been at SSFS, what brought you here, etc.

Our family joined the Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS) community in 2021, drawn by its deep-rooted Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship. We wanted a nurturing and inclusive environment where our children could thrive not only academically but also grow into compassionate and engaged global citizens. SSFS felt like the perfect fit—offering a strong sense of community and an educational approach that values both intellectual curiosity and character development.

How long have you been active with the PA? What roles have you played?

I began volunteering even before my children officially started at SSFS—as soon as we received the admission letter in March 2021, I joined the Auction Committee to support fundraising efforts for our students. Since then, I’ve remained deeply involved; I served as Auction Committee Clerk for the past three years while actively volunteering at every PA-led event. Currently I am serving as PA Clerk, a role that allows me to further contribute to this wonderful community. Being part of the PA has been an incredibly fulfilling journey of service and connection.

Why do you choose to volunteer your time to the PA at SSFS?

I believe in leading by example—showing my children the value of service, engagement, and giving back to the community. Volunteering allows me to actively participate in their educational experience, stay connected with other families, and contribute to the vibrant culture of SSFS. It’s a way to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact on our school community.

What’s your favorite part about being active in the PA?

The sense of connection and purpose—from working alongside fellow parents to learning from their experiences to supporting faculty and staff who do an amazing job with our children. Through my involvement, I’ve had the opportunity to grow and develop new skills, build relationships, and be part of something bigger and rewarding.

What’s your favorite PA-led event and why?

The Annual Auction is hands down my favorite event! It’s an incredible way to bring the community together, celebrate our school spirit, and raise essential funds that directly benefit our children and their learning experiences. The excitement, generosity, and shared commitment to SSFS make it a truly special and rewarding event every year.

What do you think you’ve gained from being active in the PA?

Being involved with the PA has been an incredibly rewarding experience, allowing me to apply and further strengthen my leadership and organizational skills. Through my role, I’ve had the opportunity to lead initiatives, collaborate with amazing parents and faculty, and drive meaningful contributions to our school community. The relationships I’ve built, the networking opportunities I’ve gained, and the personal and professional growth I continue to experience have been invaluable. Most importantly, this journey has reinforced my deep connections, and I've gained a profound appreciation for the dedication of our SSFS educators. It has reinforced my belief in the power of community and collective service.

Or, as Springers call them, "Gnu Stories"

Since our mascot is the wildebeest—also called "gnu"—our community newsletter is similarly named and shares the stories of the inspiring people, purposeful programming, and energizing events that fill our lives throughout the year.
