Inclement Weather Plans

Inclement Weather Plans - Winter 2021

Maryland’s winter weather sometimes proves challenging, and can put a wrinkle in all our best-laid plans. With that in mind, and recognizing that (for this winter, at least) we can’t proceed with our usual policy of following MCPS with regard to weather-related school closures and delays, we want to provide some general expectations around what “snow days” might look like in our new hybrid learning environment, both for our in-person and virtual learners.

We will aim to post school closure and delay information on our website, and send a text and email to all families, by 6:00 AM. Please make sure you have your correct email address, and a mobile number that can receive an emergency text notification, associated with your Veracross family information profile. (See details about updating your profile information here.)

MONDAYS

Since Mondays are virtual learning days for all students, our learning schedules will not be altered by campus closures. All students should login to their online learning classroom spaces at their regularly-scheduled time.

FULL-DAY CAMPUS CLOSURE SCENARIOS (Tuesdays-Fridays)

Given our adjusted schedule due to the pandemic, we're going to plan to conduct classes via Virtual Learning Days when possible, even if the campus is closed due to weather conditions. That said, there may be a scenario in which we have a true "snow day," when all synchronous classes will be cancelled and teachers have discretion to adjust the total hours of learning for the week, within the limit. If that scenario arises, we will be sure to let our students and families know!

On-Campus COVID Testing:
When campus is closed for inclement weather on either testing day, we will contact Potomac Pediatrics to check their availability for the next school day following closure. We will send an email confirming when testing will take place.

Transportation:
No bus service will be provided if the campus is closed for the day.

Virtual Learning Day Plans, By Division

Lower School

  • Lower School full-time distance learners should check in to their typical multi-grade cohort Google Classrooms at their standard time.
  • In-person learners (including our preschool students) should go to their grade-level teacher’s original Google Classroom after 8 am for further schedule information.
  • Please reach out to Bela Meghani (bela.meghani@ssfs.org) with any immediate questions.

Middle and Upper School

  • If a Virtual Learning Day is declared due to inclement weather, all synchronous classes will meet virtually. There may be slight adjustments to learning plans; students should check their Google Classroom pages.

PLANS FOR 2-HOUR DELAYED OPENINGS on TUESDAYS-FRIDAYS

Transportation:
Buses will run on a 2-hour delayed schedule (i.e., if your bus normally arrives at 6:45 am, it will arrive at 8:45 am).

On-Campus COVID Testing:
On-campus Covid testing for faculty and students will take place. The Covid testing clinic is open from 10 - 1 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so a 2 hour delay will not interfere with weekly testing.

Delayed Opening Plans, By Division

Lower School In-Person Learners:

  • In-person learners in preschool and grades K-5 will begin carpool at 10:00 am (no 8:00 am virtual academic check-in via Google classroom is required).
  • We will not use priority drop off, so as you approach the pillars at the entrance of the LS lot, please follow staff directions, as you will be asked to form two carpool entry lines.
  • We will be checking Magnus apps upon arrival at carpool; please be patient!
  • The rest of the day will follow our standard schedule, and dismissal will be between 3:00-3:30 pm, as usual.
  • Please reach out to Pam Gilmer (pam.gilmer@ssfs.org) if you have any questions.

Lower School Distance Learners:

  • Our distance learning students should log on to their distance learning cohort groups as scheduled; there will be no disruption to the distance learning plan for our virtual cohort based on the delayed opening.
  • Please contact Gasa (lslearningsupport@ssfs.org) with any questions regarding the K-2 cohort and Drew Singleton (drew.singleton@ssfs.org) with questions regarding the 3-5 cohort.

Middle School:

  • All classes (for in-person and distance learners) will start at 10:00 am rather than 8:00 am so that teachers and students have time to safely travel from their homes to SSFS. Middle School morning drop-off procedures will proceed as normal, but on a two-hour delayed schedule, from 9:45 - 9:55 am.  The schedule will include all regularly scheduled classes with an adjustment to the length of some of those classes.  Students will proceed to the first class of the day and school will end at 3:20 with carpool and bus loading and departing between 3:30 - 3:45 pm.
  • See the modified 2-hour delayed schedule for Middle and Upper School here.
  • In the case of weather conditions keeping us from being on campus for Tuesday, February 2, we will welcome our 6th graders and the corresponding orientation session to the very next day we are safely able to come to campus.

Upper School:

  • All classes (for in-person and distance learners) will start at 10:00 am rather than 8:00 am. The schedule will include all regularly scheduled blocks for 40 min. instead of 60 min. Normally scheduled lunch and afternoon activities and programs resume at 1:00 PM. Teachers may modify their synchronous and asynchronous work to recuperate those 20 min.
  • For the week of Feb. 1:
    • If we have a delay Tuesday, Feb. 2, Upper School will proceed with our phased return, starting with 9th & 10th Green. Covid Testing will proceed without disruption.
    • If we have a delay Thursday, Feb. 4, Upper School will proceed with our phased return, starting with 9th & 10th Gold. Covid Testing will proceed without disruption.
  • For the week of Feb 8:
    • If we have a delay Tuesday, Feb. 9 Upper School will proceed with our phased return, starting with 11th & 12th Green.  Covid Testing will proceed without disruption.
    • If we have a delay Thursday, Feb. 11 Upper School will proceed with our phased return, starting with 11th & 12th Gold. Covid Testing will proceed without disruption.
  • See the modified 2-hour delayed schedule for Middle and Upper School here.

As always, thank you for your flexibility, and please don't hesitate to contact your division head or division admin with any questions!
