Mathematics

The Sandy Spring Math Department recognizes the importance of problem solving and values abstract thinking. Our math courses are designed not only to teach fundamental concepts but also to challenge the advanced learner.

Students are required to take three years of mathematics while in the Upper School. However, college-bound students are strongly encouraged to take a fourth year of mathematics.

A student's math sequence will build on the courses taken prior to 9th grade (and as determined by placement testing and the recommendation of the middle school mathematics teacher), following the sequence of Algebra I, Integrated Geometry, and Algebra II or Advanced Algebra II.

After their Algebra II course, students may take Pre-Calculus or Advanced Pre-Calculus, followed by Calculus, Advanced Placement Calculus AB, or Advanced Placement Statistics. Alternatively, students may take Algebra III, followed, if desired, by Pre-Calculus, or Finance with Mathematical Applications. Students who have completed Advanced Placement Calculus AB as non-seniors may choose to take Advanced Placement Calculus BC the following year. Students must demonstrate basic mastery of material at each level in order to progress to the next course.

Additionally, Introduction to Computer Science is offered in the fall, and iOS Applications is offered in the spring.
