Congratulations to all SSFS student-athletes, coaches, and families on a fantastic winter season. In addition to bringing home numerous PVAC championship banners (US Women's Varsity Basketball league and tournament champs; US Men's Varsity Basketball league and tournament champs; US JV Men's Basketball tournament champs), many of our individual athletes were also recognized with all-conference honors.

SSFS News
Students, faculty, and staff enjoyed a day of community and fun during the Heads Day Carnival on Friday, March 1. The Head's Day Carnival—first held in March 2021—was one of the School's first in-person community events as we emerged from pandemic restrictions. It was a way to celebrate being together in person again and to appreciate the simple joys and wonder of childhood. See the email from Head of School Dr. Rodney Glasgow about this special new tradition, which stems from the recognition that rest, break from routine, and time to connect and play are important parts of a quality education and a strong community.
Last summer, Donté Tates began leading SSFS’s Middle and Upper School English Department. An educator since 2005, he felt like he was coming full circle, having taught at a school in nearby Hyattsville, MD, early on in his career. Donté has found a welcoming home on campus, and he has been struck by how, deeply grounded in its Quaker values, SSFS “sees the light in everyone.” Read insights into his life, past experiences, and what he looks forward to sharing with the SSFS community.
In addition to our core curricular and co-curricular offerings during the regular school day, SSFS students also participate in a variety of extracurricular clubs that provide opportunities for them to pursue their passions and interests beyond the school day. This February, several teams and clubs distinguished themselves and showcased their passions and expertise in various activities and competitions! See updates from the Model U.N., Quiz Bowl, and Speech and Debate clubs.
The Upper School's most recent Culture Cafe—sponsored by the OIEJB and ESOL departments—honored the culture and cuisine of Brazil. Thanks to Eduardo Fryszer '26 for selecting the menu items!
As we kick off March, the Office of Institutional Equity, Justice, and Belonging (OIEJB) shares a recap of February events and activities honoring Black History Month and provides information about Ramadan and Women's History Month.
This fall, the Upper School will stage Bertolt Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" on Fri., Dec. 15 at 7:00 PM, and on Sat., Dec. 16 at 2:00 PM and at 7:00 PM in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). Friday and Saturday night performances will be followed by an audience Q&A with the cast.
On Oct. 17, SSFS students, faculty, and staff began the day with a walk to the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting House for an all-school Meeting for Worship. We then gathered in cross-divisional Family Groups for bonding activities, art projects, on-campus service/stewardship, and lunch. In the afternoon, we played Morley Games and Captain's Calling, and ended the day with an all-school aerial photo.
Each year, Preschool (age 3)-Grade 1 students are paired up with a "Senior Buddy” who helps them become familiar with the SSFS community. These special “Buddies” have several lunches and recess play dates together throughout the school year. It's one of SSFS's sweetest traditions! |
