The following is sent on behalf of Tom Gibian, who is currently on a leave of absence until April 1. Questions and comments may be directed to David Hickson, Interim Head of School.

Dear SSFS Families,

I am delighted to announce Liza Long's appointment to be Head of the Lower School beginning July 1, 2019.

Liza's appointment follows a robust search which attracted applicants from the US and Europe and included a process where four finalists were invited to day-long on-campus interviews. I am grateful to the Search Committee, clerked by David Hickson and Sandra Grier, for their work.

Liza's many years of experience as a lower school classroom teacher in a number of well-regarded independent schools in the Washington metropolitan area will serve her extremely well in her new role. She knows and loves lower school students. She also knows from firsthand experience the incredible dedication and commitment that SSFS faculty and staff have for each and every one of the students under our care. I also note that Liza's experience as Director of Lower School Admissions at SSFS has afforded her insights into the broader community of families considering independent schools. Liza's enrollment and marketing expertise, which highlights the Lower School's unique qualities, will be brought to bear in her new role.

For me, the perfect candidate for an important leadership position at Sandy Spring has a skill set that includes successful teaching experience, empathy, the courage to be a change agent, a fierce desire to make a positive contribution, significant admissions/enrollment experience, a knack for marketing, a surfeit of professionalism, a strong educational background with a continuing interest in current scholarship and innovative practices relating to progressive education, and a sense of humor.  Liza checks all the boxes, and we are delighted to welcome her into this new role, where she will have the opportunity to continue to contribute to our welcoming environment, strong academic preparation, our embrace of diversity, and our commitment to providing an amazing experience for each and every Lower School student.

Our future is incredibly bright. I can't wait to be back.
