This information is also available on the website here. PHOTO of the WEEK On Sunday, Feb. 11, SSFS hosted our 7th Empty Bowl Dinner. Delicious soup, beautiful bowls (handmade and glazed over the last 2 years here in the Art Barn by our community), and great company all came together to raise funds for Feeding America, and raise awareness about hunger issues in our region. Thanks to all who volunteered, contributed, and participated in this very special event. (Read more below.) More photos can be found online here, and on Vidigami here. ALL SCHOOL NEWS ALL-School "MUST-KNOW" Upcoming Events The calendar information below is for all-school, cross-divisional events and activities in the coming weeks. 2018-2019 Re-Enrollment Contracts - Due TOMORROW (Friday, Feb. 16) Re-Enrollment Contracts were sent out to families on Friday, Feb 2, and are due tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 16. Please take a minute to login to your MyBackPack account and select the "Enrollment/Re-Enrollment" link. Contracts are due by Friday, Feb. 16th. The process only takes a few minutes! If you have questions, please contact your division head or Dawn Griffith in the Admission Office at dawn.griffith@ssfs.org or ext. 231. Thank you! Redesigned e-Newsletter is Coming! Starting next Thursday, you will notice some changes in our weekly e-newsletter format. Our current Finalsite news module is being phased out, so as we adopt the new "posts" module, we also wanted to take the opportunity to make some design updates based on parent feedback from our annual Parent Survey, sent out each June. Specifically, the redesign seeks to provide a "one-stop shop" of weekly information for parents, providing necessary news for all divisions, without being too long or overwhelming.
Note that the redesigned version of today's newsletter will also be sent to you tomorrow (Friday), so that you can have a chance to preview what the changes look in action. As always, we welcome your thoughts and input! Contact Margaret Rosser or Julie Mendez to provide feedback. Discover SSFS on Feb. 22: Please Tell a Friend! It's not too late for prospective families to come and learn about all that we have to offer here at Sandy Spring Friends School. We are still working with new inquiries, and Admission Team members will gladly take interested parents through the application process. A great place to start is our next Discover SSFS Information Session and Tour, which will be held on Thursday, February 22nd from 8:15-11:00 am. A Financial Aid Q&A will follow in Scott House. Please spread the word to your friends and neighbors who may be looking for a fantastic place for their child to learn and thrive. If possible, we request that guests RSVP. A Message from the SSFS Counselors In light of the recent school shooting tragedy in Florida, the Counseling Department at SSFS wants to remind all students and parents that we are here to support you. It is normal to feel unsure, scared, sad, and angry about this most recent school shooting. Each family will handle this in different ways; this "Talking to Children about Violence" handout from The National Association of School Psychologists can help provide some guidance. Your division's counselor can help provide a safe place to talk and process these events. Please don't hesitate to reach out. We are holding the victim's families in the light. Alumni & Friends Speed Networking Evening – Mentors Needed! On Monday, March 12 at 6:30 pm in the Middle School, SSFS will hold the second annual Alumni & Friends Speed Networking Evening, which connects Upper School students with SSFS alumni, parents, and friends working in fields of interest to students in grades 9 - 12. SSFS Participates in Farm Conference SSFS joined a number of other Friends schools with farm programs, including the Arthur Morgan School in North Carolina; Scattergood Friends School in Ohio; Friends Meeting School in Ijamsville, MD; and Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., for a three-day conference Feb 13-15. Students and staff toured the farms at SSFS and Friends Meeting School, shared farming knowledge and student learning opportunities within schools, and discussed issues of sustainability both on our campuses and at large. Along with SSFS Farmer Joe Heathcock, two SSFS students also participated in the conference, and all felt that it was a wonderful and worthwhile event. The schools plan to continue sharing knowledge and working together on collaborative projects in the future. You can read more about the conference here. Nominating for the PA Executive Committee Continues! The Parents Association is still seeking nominations for next year's PA. The best way to ensure a great, productive PA is with suggestions from the entire community, not merely a select few. Please take a moment to think of fellow parents who would be a good fit--we must emphasize that it can be anyone -- feel free to nominate yourself! Specifically, we are looking for individuals who excel at collaboration and participation, and who truly value the SSFS community. Nominations are completely anonymous and can be submitted HERE (we promise, it will only take a minute!) Share the Love: Donate to the Annual Fund Today!

Smart Sacks Packing Dates Save the dates for the following Smart Sack Packing opportunities this winter and spring. Packing for all dates begins at 8:15 am, right after drop-off, in Westview Dining Hall.
Smart Sacks is a county-wide program started by MANNA food center to help combat children's weekend hunger in Montgomery County. Twice monthly during the MCPS school year, volunteers pack donated food and deliver it to county elementary schools. Children who usually receive free meals at school take a bag of food home every Friday to ensure that they have adequate nutrition throughout the weekend. SSFS lower school students and volunteers support two local elementary schools in this initiative. This is a fun and easy way to do something meaningful with the lower school kids and provide a very worthwhile service to the community. If you are interested in helping out with this ongoing service project please contact KERRY-ANN FARMER at kerryann.farmer@yahoo.com "Loving Reading" is on the Move 2018 Library Reading Program Update: We have received more than half the numbers from Lower School, and less than half from the Middle School. Our total (as of Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 14), is 65,089 minutes, and the Wildebeest has piloted his time machine through 1958 and most of 1959. That covers the time period when Richard and Mildred Loving were arrested and found guilty of miscegenation. At the same time, Virginia's school-closing law was found to violate the State Constitution. Fifth graders are working on adding various events to the timeline – come check out their work in the library. Week 1 top readers of those reporting so far:

In addition, they have learned how to recognize common concerns related to relationships, substance use, mental health and crisis intervention. The 28 Peer Counselors represent many areas of our diverse student population, and I am so proud of all of them. They meet monthly and come up with ideas to raise awareness about mental illness, meet with the 9th graders in the Freshman Seminar classes, and offer support to their peers.
