From the first days of preschool to our 12th grade graduation ceremony, the arts are a vital and integral part of our students' academic experience.

At Sandy Spring Friends School, we believe that art is essential—not just a class you take, but a journey that enriches your soul and sharpens your intellect. Our Arts Department is dedicated to lighting up this creative path, guiding you through an extensive panorama of artistic endeavors. Here, every student becomes a traveler across the vast landscape of human expression. Our sequential curriculum immerses students in a variety of artistic disciplines, from the strokes of a paintbrush to the vibrancy of the performing arts. We delve into the cultural significance and societal impact of art, fostering a deep appreciation for its role in human history and development

I also developed my skills in photography class. The arts at SSFS gave me breadth in my artistic skills. It not only fed my interests but deepened and developed them."

"If you’re really into one kind of art but want to try something new, you’ll have plenty of opportunities. SSFS provides students who may only be interested in one medium the experience to expand their horizons and step outside their artistic comfort zone."

"I was driven to SSFS as a theater instructor due to how I can collaborate with students. I love encouraging student vision in the productions I work on. It feels great to be in an environment where we can give students the building blocks of a skill and then watch them apply it and thrive."

Felix Clarke, Technical Theater Director

"We have diverse course offerings, especially in the arts, with small class numbers and lots of personal attention. It has offerings that are unique (weaving, ceramics, sculpture, fashion) and exposes students to different forms of art that they would not normally be exposed to."

Heidi Brown, Upper and Middle School Arts Teacher

"I love how diverse the arts curriculum is at SSFS and how passionate the teachers are. The arts program helped me get into college and learn new skills—especially in Ceramics and AP studio art."

"As a practicing artist, I’m proud of my students who exhibit their work both within and beyond the campus, receive recognition in contests, and develop polished art portfolios to share with colleges and prospective employers."

Kris Morse, Upper School Arts Teacher

"At SSFS, the arts aren’t just electives — they’re woven into the curriculum from preschool through 12th grade. By engaging in visual and performing arts, students develop technical skills and personal voice; build confidence, teamwork, and creative problem-solving; and celebrate their creativity."

"At SSFS, students take advanced coursework, challenge themselves intellectually, and still find the time and support to grow as artists while pursuing multiple creative passions. The arts aren’t an 'extra' at SSFS — they are an essential part of how students learn, express themselves, and discover who they are."

Lisa Stuart P ’26, ’28, Parent

"Through Senior Passion Projects, I created the first mural for what was then the new Upper School building. SSFS’s incredible arts faculty inspired me to create a piece larger than I ever had before—a piece which went into my college portfolio and got me into my dream school, that people still talk to me about years later, and that gave me confidence to seriously pursue the arts as a career."

Former longtime Lower School art teacher Kate Santorineos, who started the tradition years ago, joined the fun!

Art as a Lifelong Journey
At SSFS, we see art as a journey—a means of spiritual and intellectual growth. Our program is finely tuned with clear learning objectives that encourage students to integrate visual and performing arts into their everyday lives, using art as a language to communicate and interpret the world around them.

Hands-On Experience and Personal Growth
Through active participation, students at Sandy Spring Friends School engage with art as creators, observers, and evaluators. Our arts curriculum nurtures skills, creativity, and personal values, equipping students to become accomplished artists who can articulate their perspectives through their work.

Opening Doors to Creativity
Our aim is to provide students with a strong technical foundation while inspiring the artistic process within. Join us in opening the door to a world of creativity and discovery at Sandy Spring Friends School.
