Sandy Spring Friends School

Winter 2019-2020

It's been a busy year so far at SSFS! Last April, Head of School Tom Gibian announced that he would be retiring at the conclusion of the 2019-20 school year. Since then, the Board of Trustees Head of School Search Committee, with the assistance of Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates and an Advisory Search Committee made up of SSFS faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni, have been busy with the search, and we are thrilled to announce the appointment of Rodney Glasgow as our next Head of School beginning in the 2020-21 academic year. Read more about Rodney in the "Features" section.

Construction of the new Upper School building continues to move along, and we’ve made huge progress since groundbreaking in 2019! In October, we invited the community to take tours of the construction site led by COO Laura Miyoshi and representatives from Keller Brothers, our construction manager. Read about the new Upper School and see pictures of the site tour in the "Around Campus" section below.

As always, we’re looking forward to several upcoming events: the annual State of the School Forum, the SSFS Community Play (see below for an announcement about this year's show!) and the Alumni & Friends Community Play Party, the SSFS Community Art Show, and the sixth annual SBP Memorial Concert featuring Ben Schenck ’81 and the Panorama Jazz Band. You can find more information about these events in the "Join Us" section. And although springtime may seem like light-years away, we are already busy planning for Alumni Weekend 2020, which will take place June 12-14. Alumni from classes ending in "0" and "5," please take a special note: you have big reunions coming up in 2020!

It's certainly been a year of change, but we are excited and energized as we enter 2020. We wish you every happiness this holiday season and look forward to seeing many of you in the new year.

SSFS Diversity Audit Report

In the Spring of the 2017-2018 school year, the School Board of Trustees and the Administration commissioned a comprehensive “diversity audit” in order to gain an outside and independent assessment of the School’s climate and efforts to create and maintain a fully inclusive and equitable environment for all.
