All-School Read

Since 2013, Sandy Spring Friends School has been home to a unique biennial summer tradition—the All School Community Read. This event, born out of the dynamic discussions of the former All School Diversity Committee (ASDC) and a creative proposal from the library, is not just about reading. It's about bringing our entire campus community together every alternating summer, from students to faculty and staff, in a shared intellectual journey.

The All-School Community Read is a biannual event where the entire Sandy Spring Friends School community—students, faculty, and staff—reads and discusses a selected book. This initiative fosters inclusivity, shared experiences, and meaningful discussions across all age groups. While the primary book is selected for its broad appeal, companion books are often chosen for younger students to ensure the themes are accessible to all age groups. This allows everyone in the community to participate meaningfully in discussions and activities. The themes of the selected books are woven into various aspects of school life, including professional development, advisories, morning meetings, and Community Day activities. This holistic approach allows for a deeper exploration and understanding of the book's themes.

What makes SSFS’s Community Read special is not just the engaging literature we choose. It's the way we make sure everyone feels included. From enriching assemblies with authors like Thanhha Lai, to year-long activities promoting cultural understanding and inclusiveness, this is more than a reading initiative. It's a journey that gives voice and recognition to every member of our school, regardless of age.
