Quotes, Quirks, and Quakerisms

There are over 70 Quaker schools across the nation. While they share key values, each community is unique. We are Sandy Spring Friends School…and this is how we do Quakerism.

Heard around campus

SSFS is a little quirky—quirky in the best way! It’s a welcoming community that constantly grows and gets better. It’s a community where you’re going to find your people.

When we ask students, staff, alums, and families to share what makes SSFS unique...

...they overflow with enthusiastic reflection. In fact, the phrase, “delightfully quirky” comes up regularly!

What does “quirky” mean, anyway?  One definition is “unusual, especially in an interesting or appealing way.”

Sounds like SSFS!

We invite you to see SSFS through the eyes of members of our community, and learn how our identity as a Friends institution meaningfully shapes every aspect of school life, giving us shared purpose, a deep sense of belonging, and—joy!

Quirky Quaker Quotes

Hear directly from our community about what sets SSFS apart from other schools—and makes us delightfully quirky!

William Henderson '22

"I’m proud that I have solidified myself as a campus leader. I’m definitely fully invested in my various roles; I bring passion, dedication, and—like SSFS, which finds unique ways to showcase the interconnectedness of the SPICES, experiential learning, and traditional learning—a little quirkiness to everything I do."

William Henderson '22, Alum

Tobi Goss '10

"At SSFS, you aren’t expected to be anything other than yourself, every day. Your quirks—your learning style, your interests, etc.—are welcomed and appreciated. It’s a school that seeks to open its doors to everyone—you’ll never be put in a box."

Tobi Goss '10, Alum

Keith Adams

"Quirky traditions, often involving the performing arts, have long been characteristic of the SSFS culture from its earliest years."

Keith Adams, Upper and Middle School Music Teacher

"In addition to leading the History Department, I am also a parent. This is a place where a quirky little guy, who was described by his teachers as ‘always trying to do simple tasks in the most complicated and unusual ways possible,’ has grown into an independent, kind, informed, well-rounded, and caring young man. My son attributes much of who he is to the people and opportunities he has encountered at SSFS."

Claire Anderson P ’26, Grades 6-12 History Department Head, Parent

Aimee Farley

"It’s hard to think of just one example of what makes SSFS delightfully quirky! In all three divisions, you see the individuality of each student—you are who you are here."

Aimee Farley, Associate Director Admission

Franny's Farm Blog: Who's On Campus When We're Away?

This month's blog post from Francis Zell '00 (a.k.a. Farmer Franny) is adapted from his presentation at the 2025 All-School Winter Assembly. Franny shared a video with photos taken by a night camera over Thanksgiving break, capturing images of all the wildlife on our campus. He then reflects on stewardship and how important our campus is not just to the humans on campus, but also the wildlife, and the importance of seeing the world from all angles and developing empathy.

As part of a longstanding tradition each December, Lower and Middle School students came to the Art Barn for special candle-making days. Former longtime Lower School art teacher Kate Santorineos, who started the tradition years ago, joined the fun!

This community of ours generously, joyfully, and lovingly crafted a collection of 340+ humorous, whimsical, elegant, useful, colorful, and stunningly creative bowls, large and small, all with the goal of helping others. Delicious treats were provided by Friends House and by SSFS, fortifying our guests for the difficult work of deciding which special bowls would travel home with them. Final totals are still being tallied, but so far, $3,500 has been raised to donate to Feeding America. That's 35,000 nourishing meals, plus the canned food donations for the Sharp Street Food Pantry. Lower School Friday Assemblies Highlight Values

Starting this fall, the entire Lower School has been gathering monthly on Friday mornings in Yarnall Gym for special themed assemblies. Students in different grades have taken turns leading a portion of the assembly. So far, themes have included "Peace" (Admin), "Belonging" (2nd grade); and "Gratitude" (5th grade). These themed assemblies will run throughout the rest of the school year, so stay tuned for more great stories! This has been an exciting adventure as the Lower School has not had regular assemblies since the 2019-2020 school year, and we are happy to have this tradition back up and running again. See a video put together by Assistant Head of Lower School, Joel Gunzburg, to showcase the theme of "belonging."

Community Day 2024 - Thank You for Great Day!

Community Day began as "Mountain Day" in the early years of the School, when, inspired by one of the beautifully sunny, crisp days of the season, the then-head of school would spontaneously announce that classes were canceled, and the students loaded into a bus for a hiking trip. Although the School's larger size limits spontaneity a bit, and the day incorporates other elements such as campus stewardship (Thank you to the Community Day Committee for their planning!), the weather on Oct. 18 was just right to enjoy the season, and each other!

9th Grade Camping Trip 2024

9th grade students and staff camped at Calleva for their 3-day class trip. They enjoyed hikes, games, ziplines, team-building activities, campfires, Meeting for Worship, and a special appearance by the Northern Lights!

On Oct. 10-11, 8th grade students and teachers traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit the National Mall, Smithsonian Museums, and the Smithsonian National Zoo as enrichment for their history and science classes.

Civic Engagement at SSFS

Civic engagement is at the heart of a Sandy Spring Friends School education. Election years offer a unique opportunity not only to reiterate our commitment to civic engagement, but also to civil engagement, expressing our views with a respect for the views of others and an openness to understand rather than to judge. The Office of Institutional Equity, Justice, and Belonging (OIEJB), in partnership with the Head of School’s Office, division heads, deans, and teachers, have worked to create the “SSFS Guidelines on Civic Engagement and the School Environment” as a way to establish norms and skills at our school.

SSFS Celebrates Latine Heritage Month

For the first heritage month celebration of the 2024-2025 school year, SSFS seeks to recognize the many contributions of the Latine community both on campus and in the world. Sep. 15 through Oct. 15 marks Latine Heritage Month–also known as Hispanic Heritage Month–honoring and celebrating the vibrant histories, cultures, languages, traditions, values, and contributions of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Read more about the history of this heritage month, and some SSFS's celebratory activities.

2024-2025 Beginning of Year All-School Assembly

SSFS marks the start of each new school year with an all-school opening assembly. The Sep. 17 gathering included welcome remarks by Torch clerk Rosario S. ’25 and Interim Head of School Christine Lewis, followed by presentations from the Upper School’s “Difference Makers” club and the Latine Affinity Group highlighting the International Day of Peace and Latine Heritage Month. Lower, Middle, and Upper School students performed peace-themed songs (“Paz e Libertad,” “Siri Ni Mojo”), and we enjoyed a beginning-of-year slideshow. The assembly concluded with an enthusiastic all-school sing of “The George Fox Song!"

Welcome to the 2024-2025 Empty Bowl Project at SSFS!

SSFS has been involved in the Empty Bowl project's fight against hunger since 2005. Connecting art, community, and service along with education about the worldwide crisis of hunger, Empty Bowl is now found in schools and art centers around the world. At SSFS, the entire community is invited to help others by making simple, complex, large, or small ceramic bowls over the course of numerous weekend sessions. The beautiful pieces are then offered for purchase at a simple fundraising dinner held in early spring. Save the dates of Oct. 6 and 20 for glazing sessions in the Art Barn!

Friends Day 2024

One of SSFS's core values is community, and ours grows each year, with new families joining returning families and friends to build upon traditions and make the School an even more vibrant place to learn, work, play, and support one other. The Parents' Association's Friends Day offers a great opportunity for parents/guardians, students, and faculty/staff to connect, learn, and have fun together. See details below!
