SSFS News
On Saturday, September 28, the SSFS Quiz Bowl Team demonstrated continued academic excellence by advancing to the playoffs of It’s Academic for the 10th time in 12 years!
Community Day is scheduled for Fri. Oct. 18 (rain date Oct. 29)! This special event features the entire community—every student, teacher, and member of the staff and administration—coming together to make personal connections, strengthen community bonds, and serve together. Learn more about this unique, all-school annual tradition, including the history of the day and the activities planned, in the Community Day Primer.
Construction to repair the Performing Arts Center (PAC) will soon begin, requiring us to pack up costumes, props, and equipment. Please consider assisting the arts faculty on Sat., Oct. 12 and/or Sat., Oct. 19. We are looking for adult and Upper School student helpers (students can earn service hours). Each work session will be three hours; sign up for as many sessions as you can! If you have questions, please contact Michelle Puhl-Price or Christian Ely.
Civic engagement is at the heart of a Sandy Spring Friends School education. Election years offer a unique opportunity not only to reiterate our commitment to civic engagement, but also to civil engagement, expressing our views with a respect for the views of others and an openness to understand rather than to judge. The Office of Institutional Equity, Justice, and Belonging (OIEJB), in partnership with the Head of School’s Office, division heads, deans, and teachers, have worked to create the “SSFS Guidelines on Civic Engagement and the School Environment” as a way to establish norms and skills at our school.
This fall, the Upper School will stage Bertolt Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" on Fri., Dec. 15 at 7:00 PM, and on Sat., Dec. 16 at 2:00 PM and at 7:00 PM in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). Friday and Saturday night performances will be followed by an audience Q&A with the cast.
On Oct. 17, SSFS students, faculty, and staff began the day with a walk to the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting House for an all-school Meeting for Worship. We then gathered in cross-divisional Family Groups for bonding activities, art projects, on-campus service/stewardship, and lunch. In the afternoon, we played Morley Games and Captain's Calling, and ended the day with an all-school aerial photo.
Each year, Preschool (age 3)-Grade 1 students are paired up with a "Senior Buddy” who helps them become familiar with the SSFS community. These special “Buddies” have several lunches and recess play dates together throughout the school year. It's one of SSFS's sweetest traditions! |
Our middle- and upper-school fall sport student athletes were celebrated at the all-school pep rally on Friday, Oct. 13, which also included fun games and lots of dancing!
