2008-2009 9th Grade Life Skills Class
The Life Skills class refers to two very important parts of the 9th grade curriculum. Every student is expected to have a Life Skills class once per week and a study period the other days. This gives the 9th graders an opportunity to do some homework during the school day, make-up a quiz or test, or talk to a teacher. It is also the time when the US Counselor teaches the curriculum for the Life Skills Class.
The Life Skills Class is a full year discussion-based health class. There are no tests, papers, or quizzes, but attendance and participation is required for all 9th graders. The main themes for this class include: sex education, drug and alcohol awareness, stress and time management, conflict resolution, physical and mental health, money management and decision making. Students are expected to participate in the classroom discussions and to read the articles and pamphlets that are handed out. There is a curriculum for each class, but there is also flexibility if the students want to talk about other topics. Each student is given a folder at the end of the year filled with interesting handouts, pamphlets, local resources, and their own worksheets that will serve as a resource throughout high school.
