Camp Descriptions
Backyard ScienceThis camp is a combination of natural studies and experiential outdoor activities on SSFS’s 140-acre campus. Each week will be developmentally appropriate and may include biology, earth science, forest ecology, animal tracking, natural ecosystems, field trips, camp crafts and orienteering. Head Counselor: Janet Prouty (SFDC, 7th summer) has advanced degrees in math and education. Janet is an educator, has been a scout leader for ten years, and has worked with elementary school students through Hands-On Science. Tuition: $400
CrittersJoin us for fun, interactive animal adventures! Discover the animal kingdom (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and spiders) through hands-on developmentally appropriate experiences with animals, games, crafts, stories and more. Tuition: $400
Geology CampGeology Camp provides hands-on academic experience exploring fundamental concepts of the earth. Campers will have an introduction to Earth processes and rocks that make up the interior and exterior of this planet. Young geologists will examine models that mirror the Earth's interior and explore the principle categories of rock classification: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. Campers will take a field trip to either a mineral/fossils collecting site or a location that shows superb geologic structure. Hands-on projects may include: models of volcanoes or the Earth's core, GPS receiver projects and map making. Head Counselor: Stephanie Thliveris (SFDC, 5th summer, SSFS, 5th year) has a Masters in Geology. Tuition: $400
Math GamesCampers will use math to examine the natural world such as calculating the heights of trees with similar triangles; creating astro labs to measure angles of the sun; and building meter wheels to track distances. Math wizards will sharpen skills playing mathematical games, puzzles and problem solving. Head Counselor: Janet Prouty (SFDC, 7th summer) Tuition: $400
WhoDunit CampAspiring young writer? Intrigued by the idea of writing a mystery? Love the spine-tingling feeling of a good thriller? Answer: WhoDunit Camp! Young authors will learn the fundamentals of mystery writing: outlining the story, establishing clues and creating detectives and suspects who are believable, while keeping readers in suspense. Mysteries will be non-violent, but stories will be exciting! Head Counselor: Helen Clark (SFDC, 3rd summer) has a Masters in Education. Helen is a professional writer, works at Rockville High School as a composition assistant and is currently writing a mystery novel. Tuition: $400
Ancient Egypt CampBuilding pyramids, creating symbolic murals and costumes, feasting on Egyptian cuisine and reading hieroglyphics are some of the exciting adventures campers will experience as they enter the world of Ancient Egypt. Come join the journey along the Nile during the era of the Pharaohs and the Sphinx. Head Counselors: Jonathan Oglesbee (SFDC, 5th summer) and Barbara Flint Oglesbee (SFDC, 4th summer) Tuition: $400
Medieval History: Live!Explore the age of knights in shining armor, lavish banquets, wandering minstrels, kings, queens, bishops, monks, pilgrims and glorious pageantry! Through research and interactive activities campers will learn how to be good historians while investigating Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. Head Counselor: Dan Reiner (SFDC, 4th summer) Tuition: $400
Ancient China: Live!Explore this influential civilization through research and interactive activities. Discover the country with walls that can be seen from space, emperors, secret cities and fascinating legends. Through indoor and outdoor programs, campers will be taught about the people who were first to create silk, kites, fireworks and more. Head Counselor: Dan Reiner (SFDC, 4th summer) Tuition: $400
Adobe PhotoshopThis camp helps build an appreciation for computers and art by learning a 21st century skill. Using scanners and an assortment of images, campers will create a variety of interesting art projects. Campers are invited to bring photographs, personal art work, or other intriguing items to scan. Prior experience with computers is not necessary. Tuition: $400
Computer BasicsAn introductory camp to all aspects of computers. Each day participants focus on topics such as word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, web page development, Powerpoint or the Internet. Campers will do fun age-appropriate activities to develop technology skills. Tuition: $400
Rocketry I, II & Remarkable RocketsRocketry I enables campers with no modeling experience to become seasoned rocketeers as they construct model rockets, finish them in creative paint schemes and launch them to astonishing altitudes. From the patience of quality construction to the pride of launch and recovery, campers will have an educational and exciting experience. Rocketry II is for those who have attended Rocketry I or have similar prior experience. Rocketry II uses more complex rockets and larger engines to attain higher altitudes. Remarkable Rockets is for those who have attended Rocketry II and enjoy a challenge. Remarkable rocketeers will build one-of-a-kind rockets, attempting to attain even higher altitudes. Tuition: $400
RoboticsThis introductory camp is designed for those interested in learning about building robots using LEGO® Mindstorm kits. Each day, campers will build robots and focus on the mechanics of light sensors, motors and gears. Head Counselor: Dan Reiner (SFDC, 4th summer) will be one of the head counselors for Robotics this summer. Tuition: $400, week of July 4 tuition, $320
