Advisory Program
Middle School advisors have numerous roles in the lives of their advisees. They are responsible for serving as student advocates, supporting their advisees in school endeavors and helping them to achieve an appropriate balance between academic and extracurricular activities. Some of their official duties include clerking and guiding the weekly advisor group meeting, supervising the tutorial and silent reading periods, and writing the end-of-year comprehensive student review about each advisee.
Unofficially, but just as important, is the expectation that the faculty member will make the effort to get to know the student beyond the structured classroom setting. At the start of the year, each advisor will administer an "Advisee Inventory," which will assist the advisor in learning about his or her advisee's likes and dislikes and some of their personal interests and habits. The advisee inventories, which include student statements about nightly study habits and phone and TV time, can be very helpful during parent-teacher conferences.
It is expected that over the course of the year each advisor group will create, or participate in, a community service activity. The selection of this activity is usually made by the winter break.
Advisor period is from 8:00 - 8:10 a.m. every morning and for 45 minutes once a cycle. Each period has one of three purposes: advisor group issues and planning, Quakerism study and discussion, or adolescent issues. Quakerism and adolescent issues follow curricula created by Middle School faculty and staff.
