Middle School Athletics

The Sandy Spring Friends School Athletic Department always keeps in mind the abiding reason why sports are in schools: sports are educational and create balance for an individual.

Athletics are an integral part of the Middle School curriculum at SSFS. Through participation in the athletic program, students develop good habits in health and physical conditioning, have an opportunity to learn about a variety of sports, and gain an awareness of their physical capabilities. Students also experience and deal with competition in a positive and constructive manner, develop self-discipline, and learn and practice good sportsmanship. Development and skill progression are vital to the overall success of our entire athletic program.

Middle School Sports Teams

At the middle school level, coaches accommodate students with a wide range of experience and skills. Students new to a sport are given an introduction to the sport and its rules, and all players will develop individual skills and learn basic team principles. Playing time is determined by a combination of skill, skill improvement, attitude, and attendance.

If students meet the requirements of attitude and attendance, they are guaranteed to play in every regular season game in which they dress. Occasionally, participation numbers are very high, and teams are configured to best meet the needs of the players and the coach. During playoffs, when the level of competition increases, playing time is more dependent on skill as well as attitude and attendance.

Physical Education in the Middle School

All middle school students take Physical Education as part of their academic requirement and it is part of the regular rotation of classes. Students learn the rules and skills of a variety of sports, activities, and games. An adventure curriculum utilizing the 40' indoor climbing wall and outdoor low ropes course is also a component of the P.E. program in the Middle School. Fitness, dance, and wellness concepts are also introduce and revisited throughout the year.

All students participate in the Fitnessgram® fitness test developed by the Cooper Institute of Aerobics, which focuses on "healthy fitness" zones rather than sports related fitness.
 

Health Class in the Middle School: All middle school students take health as part of their academic requirement. Students learn health skills including self-management, goal setting, decision making, accessing reliable information, analyzing internal and external influences, interpersonal communication, and advocacy skills as well as grade-specific content.
