Admission Application Deadline for Domestic Applicants:
Thank you for your interest in Sandy Spring Friends School. Although our admission application deadline has passed, we continue to accept applications to all grades. You can reach us at admission@ssfs.org or 301-774-7455 if you have any questions.

We are pleased that you are considering a Sandy Spring Friends School Education. Our application is available online with easy access to your checklist to help you manage the process. Follow these simple steps below.

  1. Review the Application Timeline and learn more about important dates and deadlines.
  2. Application requirements for Lower School (PK-5), Middle School (6-8), and Upper School (9-12) can be found below. Please note that there is a $75 application fee.
  3. You can check your application status by logging in to monitor the status of the application.
  4. All required credentials are to be either faxed (301-576-8664) or sent as PDFs (to admission@ssfs.org) to the Admission Office directly by those completing the forms.
  5. Required downloadable forms can be found below, or on the online application checklist.

LOWER SCHOOL APPLICATION: GRADES PK-5

If you have questions about your child's birthday and cut-off dates, please review the Age Requirements for Admission. To find out more about our Lower School program, visit the Lower School section of our website.

Testing Requirement:
Students entering PK-1: Applicants will undergo screening during their playgroup visit. Should additional testing be needed, a list of local qualified testers is provided on the Admission Testing Information sheet.
Students entering Grades 2-5: Schedule the applicant to be tested by an educational diagnostician as soon as possible. A list of local qualified testers is provided on the Admission Testing Information sheet. The testing center will send the results directly to Sandy Spring Friends School.

School Records Request Form
Complete Section I of the School Records Request form and give the form to the registrar at the applicant's current school. This permission form authorizes the release of your child's school records. Please have the registrar fax or email (as a PDF) the form directly to the Admission Office.

For applicants still in preschool, if the current school does not have any school records to forward to us, the preschool administrator should write a statement to that effect on the School Records Request Form.

Teacher Recommendation:

  • For applicants to Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 1, we require the Confidential Teacher Evaluation Form (PK-1st). The teacher should fax or email (as a PDF) the completed evaluation form directly to our office.

  • For applicants to Grades 2-5, we require the Confidential Teacher Evaluation Form (2nd-5th). The teacher should fax or email (as a PDF) the completed evaluation form directly to our office. Applicants who have different teachers for math and language arts should ask each of those teachers to complete an evaluation form.

MIDDLE SCHOOL APPLICATION: GRADES 6-8

Testing Requirement:
Applicants entering 6th through 8th grade are required to take either the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). To register the applicant for the SSAT, visit their website and register on-line at www.ssat.org or call SSAT at (609) 683-4440 to request a Student Registration Guide. The school code number for Sandy Spring Friends School is 7090. To register for the ISEE visit their website at www.iseetest.org or call 1-800-446-0320. The ISEE school code for Sandy Spring Friends School is 210937.

School Records Request Form
Complete section I of the School Records Request form and give it directly to the registrar at the applicant's current school. The form authorizes the release of all school records, including progress reports, test scores, health records, any educational evaluations and IEP's. Please have the registrar fax or email (as a PDF) the form directly to the Admission Office. Please include a transcript with the last two academic years of study. For example, if you are applying to 8th grade, the admission review committee will need to see 5th and 6th grade plus the first semester or trimester of 7th grade.

* We realize that semester/trimester grades for Middle School applicants will not be available until early February. Please ensure the current school sends us the grades as soon as they are available.

Recommendation Forms

We require three confidential recommendations. Please give these forms to the applicant's current English and Mathematics teachers, as well as to the counselor/principal at your school. Each recommendation form should be faxed or emailed (as a PDF) directly to the Admission Office by the faculty/staff who has completed it.

Student Questionnaire:
Have the applicant complete the Student Questionnare and fax or email (as a PDF) it to the Admission Office.

UPPER SCHOOL APPLICATION (domestic students): GRADES 9-12

Shadow Day:
Domestic applicants: Applicants are encouraged to take part in an optional half-day visit to provide the opportunity to attend classes with a current student.

Applicants to the 5- or 7-day boarding program:

* Our preferred method of application is the SSFS online application. However, we will also accept the SSAT or TABS application for admission.
