New Middle School

When the doors of the new building open in September of 2005, an estimated 16 additional students will join both our 6th and 7th grades. The current two sections at each of these grade levels will increase to three sections. This expansion presents the first opportunity for the Middle School to increase its enrollment since the early 1990s.

The new two-story space will contain state-of-the-art science and technology labs, and spacious classrooms. The arrangement calls for a designated French and Spanish language lab as well as art and music studios physically integrated into the Middle School.

The new Middle School building will also feature a central atrium. "This space is integral to the program," explains Dana Harrison, Head of the Middle School. "It will be used for community-building activities, and will serve as a gathering place for the spiritual components of the program."

The Middle School curriculum, which currently begins at fifth grade, will transition into a sixth through eighth grade program; fifth grade will become part of the Lower School. Plans call for creation of a departmentalized curriculum with dedicated wings for each grade level.

"The Middle School faculty is tremendously excited to have the opportunity to design a program specifically suited for sixth, seventh and eighth graders in a beautiful, new facility," Dana says.
