About SSFS
Welcome from the Head of School, Ken Smith

Ken Smith, Head of SchoolA warm welcome to all whether you are looking at Sandy Spring Friends School as a possible career opportunity, as a school choice, or you are looking at our Web site because you have heard about us and are just curious. Sandy Spring Friends School is truly a unique community. Of course, it is a school. But, many people - the ones who end up spending a good deal of time here - know Sandy Spring Friends School more as an attitude or a way of life.

During the academic year, 2007-2008, we have 561 students in PK - 12 with 155 faculty and staff. Although only 15 percent of our students are Quaker, all of us adhere to the Quaker concept of Continuing Revelation which holds that truth is not static, but ever changing as we apply our experience, intellect, knowledge and wisdom to our lives. At our best, this concept ensures that we are a dynamic, growing community. Our students learn that faculty are approachable and open to new insights as, together, we seek the truth which a quality education and a life well lived can provide. It is the resulting relationships that exist between students and faculty that make Sandy Spring Friends School so vital. Please look us over carefully, and come check us out in person.

Cordially,

Overview

Sandy Spring Friends School is a pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade coeducational college preparatory day school with optional five- and seven-day boarding programs in the Upper School. SSFS is an independent school, under the care of the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends.

Enrollment for the academic year 2007-08 is 561 students total in all three divisions: Lower School (186 students, pre-K through grade 5); Middle School (135 students, grades 6 - 8); and Upper School (240 students, grades 9 -12). We have 40 students enrolled in the Residential Program (14 5-day and 26 7-day boarders) and 35 students in the International Student Program.

Founded in 1961 by S. Brook Moore, the campus is located on a 140-acre wooded campus in the historic Quaker community of Sandy Spring, in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland. The site is midway between Baltimore and Washington, and is served by three international airports: Baltimore/Washington, Dulles, and Reagan National.

The School offers strong academics, arts and athletic programs, with an emphasis on traditional Quaker values.
